JUST LIKE FIREWORKS

Label: I Forget, Sorry! / Other Tongues

March 18th, 2011 marked the release of Mind Over Matter's sophomore album 'Just Like Fireworks'. Kicking things off in late 2010 with the debut single release 'Rappers In Wonderland', which was added to playlist on Triple J and community radio taste makers, FBi. The new 17 track long player is host to a melody of original and sample based beats which features a list of talented guest vocalist including; Pigeon John (US), Vida-Sunshyne, Saving Grace, Drakezilla, Jon Reichardt, Ernst Carter Junior (aka Sam Mcniell) and Lillian Blue. Mind Over Matter also incorporated; Matik (Pez/Seth Sentry), Poker Beats (Hilltop Hoods), Konfuzion, Allrounda (Germany) (DE) DJ Ilz, Jon Reichardt (producer/multi-instrumentalist/vocalist) and Saving Grace in the production of their new album.

Littered with punching percussion, driving guitar rhythms, and backed up with an infectious, chant style chorus, 'This Wonderful Life' is a shanty inspired crowd anthem and marks the second single from the album. At 142 Bpm and a 12:8 time signature this is the fastest the M.O.M. recorded themselves rapping to date. 'This Wonderful Life' is direct reflection of how much fun the duo had while recording Just Like Fireworks. Willow and Smiles regularly exchange clever banter and witty wordplay, especially on upbeat numbers like 'Rappers In Wonderland' and 'Just Like Fireworks'. Other stand outs include 'Hollow Eyes ft. Jon Reichardt' (taking a more serious approach by addressing the issue of the drug and sex slave industry in Kings Cross and Thailand), and of course live favourites 'Famous ft. Ernst Carter Jnr.' and 'Off The Chain'. Other collaborative efforts on the album include the reggae styled tune 'Harder ft. Vida-Sunshyne' and 'I Been Told ft. Pigeon John'. M.O.M. have looked up to and been influenced by Pigeon John's work for over a decade so felt both excited and privileged to be working with him on their record.

The album is given deeper dimension with songs like 'Sunshine In You' explaining the hardships of two close friends in extended verses and 'Broken Me' which sped up sample based chorus accompanied with an 8 piece male and female choir is deep enough to pull on the heart strings of even the hardest individual.

FREE THE WOLVES

Released: Febuary 2009
Label: I Forget, Sorry!
Distribution: Independent

'Free The Wolves' is the second mixtape from Australian hip hop duo 'Mind Over Matter' and follows the success of their debut LP 'Keepin' It Breezy'.

The release begins with a monologue from friend and supporter Eso (Bliss N Eso) and it's nothing short of ear-opening. From the beginning you know you're in for something heavy, but luckily what follows is a solid selection of original material, remixes, and collaborations with other prominent local hip-hop names, like Coptic Soldier, Phatchance, and Drakezilla.

Standout single 'It's Not A Secret' features production by internationally renowned Swedish hip-hop stars Loop Troop and welds together an amazing array of ping-pong samples to build a tight rhythm section over which the rappers demonstrate the lyrics which have quickly propelled them to the forefront of Australian hip-hop. This release also features 'I Forget, Sorry!' Bonus Disc #3 - 'I'd Fight Superman'.

KEEPIN' IT BREEZY

Released - 2008
Label: Nurcha Records
Distribution: MGM

Proving that age is no barrier, the debut offering from young Sydney duo Mind Over Matter 'Keepin' it Breezy' is an impressive introduction to a crew that are breaking the Australian hip hop mould. Combining impressive lyrical wordplay with out of the box production, 'Keepin' it Breezy' is certain to turn heads amongst industry and audience alike.

Emerging from Sydney's vibrant hip hop community in 2006, Mind Over Matter quickly established themselves as artists to be reckoned with through their highly lauded mixtape 'For Our Hip Hoppers'. With the success of this release, MCs Willow and Smiles Again garnered an audience nationwide and have cemented this following through supporting international and local heavy-weight acts like Masta Ace (USA), Planet Asia (USA), Mystro (UK), Bliss N Eso, Hyjak & Torcha, Pegz, Def Wish Cast, Bias B and Muph & Plutonic.

Executively produced by Phatchance and Drakezilla 'Keepin' it Breezy' demonstrates a divergent hip hop talent; the album glistens with slick production as the boys unleash over 60 minutes of lyrical venom. The opening track 'City of Stars' resounds with a haunting female vocal, a heavy snare underpins the beat and a string sample ties the whole thing together. Like a number of tracks on the album, the lyrics offer an honest appraisal of the culture and community Mind Over Matter are immersed in. Wit comes to the fore with quotable rhymes like 'I don't move with a nice watch, a pair of headphones is the only jewelry I rock' and immediately the scene is set for the listener.

'Keepin' it Breezy' is an album that takes its audience on a musical journey - tracks like 'Sunshine' and 'A Beautiful Truth' demonstrate a musical maturity and versatility far beyond Mind Over Matter's young age. The lyrics resonate with a street poetic and are meet with equal aptitude and clarity on the musical front. The album takes flight with tracks like 'Million Man March', with it's military marching band beat and features from label mates Natural Causes, Double & Big Lu, DJ Ilz and Drake MC.

Undoubtedly the album standout - 'Proud' sees the lads team up with a 35 piece children's and adult's choir and international producer Styalz Fuego (Snoop Dogg, Kelis, Busta Rhymes) to create a song that sets this young crew apart with unique creativity and musical professionalism.

Nominated for Triple J's 'Album Of The Year' in 2008.
